Capturing stunning images in low light conditions can be an elusive feat for any photographer, whilst capturing the same in broad daylight seems effortless but while you step into a cozy indoor settings like a hotel room, after sunset areas, the lighting becomes a formidable task. Capturing subjects in low light conditions will bring some underexposed, hazy and yellowish photos which will leave you frustrated!

But no worries, say goodbye to some poorly lit and underexposed shots, as we have assembled a guide which will empower you to create some stunning images in the indoor conditions.

#1 : Embrace Natural Light!

Open all of your doors and curtains to let in natural light, and turn off any artificial lights that are in the way of taking indoor photography because they cast harsh shadows and interfere with the natural contrast between indoor and outdoor lighting that gives photographs their distinctive natural look.

So open the windows and let the natural light pour in to illuminate the scene and work your desired spell.

Secondly, to achieve the best results, position your subject near a window or any other natural light source. Soft, diffused light coming from the side can beautifully highlight facial features and add depth to your images. Avoid placing your subject directly in front of a window, as this may result in overexposure.

#2 : Mastering White Balance!

If you've ever taken pictures of subjects inside, you may have noticed that the lighting can make the subjects appear very dark, foggy, or even produce unattractive blue, orange, or even green colour casts.

The reason behind this color imbalance is that auto white balancing on most cameras has limitations, usually covering a range of 3000-4000K or occasionally up to 7000K, leaving the camera struggling to accurately interpret whites under various lighting conditions.

To tackle this issue and achieve true colors in your indoor images, manual whitebalane settings are essential. Take control of your camera's white balance settings and explore the in-built white balance presets like Tungsten, shadow, fluoroscent and match the white balance settings, which matches with your lighting conditions and you can eliminate those annoying colour casts and improve the general look of your indoor photos.

Remember, mastering the white balance will empower you to unleash true colors of the subject and will help you capture true beauty shots in their natural look.

#3 : Mastering Camera Settings!

It's crucial to explore your camera's settings and realize their potential if you want to successfully overcome the difficulties of indoor shooting. You can successfully control the amount of light entering your camera, producing stunningly lighted inside images, by knowing and adjusting parameters like shutter speed, ISO, and aperture.

  • SHUTTER SPEED: The shutter speed determines how long the camera's shutter remains open, capturing light and freezing the moment in time. In low-light conditions, opt for a slower shutter speed, such as 1/100th of a second or less, to allow more light to reach the camera sensor. For brightly lit scenes, higher shutter speeds should be used to prevent overexposure.

  • ISO: ISO determines the camera's sensitivity to light. In well-lit outdoor scenarios, lower ISO values like 100 suffice to avoid graininess and maintain image clarity. However, when shooting indoors, where light is limited, you'll need to increase the ISO value to around 600 or more to brighten up your subject.

  • APERTURE: The aperture setting controls the size of the lens diaphragm, regulating the amount of light that enters the camera. The f/stops, represented by numbers like 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, and 16, dictate the size of the aperture. Lower f/stops, like f/1.4 or f/2, allow more light to pass through, making the subject appear brighter. Conversely, higher f/stops, such as f/16, restrict the amount of light, useful for controlling exposure in brightly lit conditions.

By mastering these fundamental camera settings, you gain creative control over your indoor photography, capturing moments with precision and artistry. Experiment with different combinations to uncover the perfect formula for each unique indoor setting, casting a spell of brilliance over your images.

#4 : Use a Tripod/Monopod!

With a longer shutter speed to allow more light into the lens, even the slightest movement of your hands can lead to blurry and hazy photos. A tripod or monopod steadies your camera, preventing unwanted shake and producing crisp results.

To further minimize the risk of camera shake, consider using a tripod or a monopod and with this, it will eliminate the possibility of you directly handling the camera which may cause shaky or blurry images and also instead use a self timer or a cable release which will ensure proper stillness during the capture.

#5 : Use Manual Focus!

In low-light indoor conditions, relying solely on autofocus can sometimes lead to frustration. Unlike bright sunny days where autofocus shines, indoor lighting can challenge the camera's ability to accurately differentiate contrast in the scene.

To overcome this hurdle and capture impressive indoor images, switch to manual focus mode. By taking control of the focus, you ensure that the camera precisely captures the intended subject without getting confused by the dim lighting.

By using manual focus in low-light indoor settings, you empower yourself to be the master of focus and unlock the true potential of your camera. With a little practice and patience, you'll witness a remarkable improvement in the quality of your indoor photographs, capturing moments with unparalleled precision and artistry.

So, the next time you find yourself in a cozy indoor setting or amidst dimly lit ambiance, fear not! Armed with these tips and tricks, you can confidently capture stunning images that truly do justice to the enchanting moments before you. Happy shooting, and may your indoor photography journey be filled with magic and brilliance!

So next time, you find yourselves in low light indoor conditions, with these methods and tips at your disposal, you may confidently take beautiful pictures that accurately depict the mesmerizing moments in front of you.
